The van lives off grid, with all of the basics we need to function: water, food, power. We have a system where we pump water from the van’s well and store it in tanks onsite. We use solar panels and a wind turbine to generate electricity. Why the Cyrix CT cut-off relay?
Our experience has been that the Cyrix CT relay is a poor choice for off-the-grid living because of its high price and low reliability. We have also found that there are other, better options available for relay systems. The Cyrix CT relay is a costly option compared to other relays available on the market. At just over $100, it is by far the most expensive relay system we were able to find. This cost would be prohibitive if we were only using this system to support one or two devices, but our setup involves using several devices simultaneously. For example, our solar panels produce electricity both during the day when there is sunlight and at night when the sun is down. Our wind turbines generate power during daytime hours when there’s wind blowing and at night when the wind dies down. Our water pump needs to run all day and all night to keep our home plumbing running properly. Using a single Cyrix CT relay would have been too expensive and would not have been able to handle all these simultaneous demands easily.
Another reason why we chose not to use the Cyrix CT relay was its poor reliability. We have had numerous occasions where our devices have failed due to issues with the Cyrix CT relay system.
